Call for Applications: CUE Global Scholars Program at the Brookings Institution

The Brookings Institution has just announced that they are beginning recruitment for the third cohort of the Center for Universal Education’s Global Scholars Program. The program offers guest scholars from developing countries the opportunity to pursue their own independent research on global education issues with a specific focus on girls’ education. Guest scholars will also be supported to develop and implement a plan to share their expertise with their home institutions to further build research capacity and expertise. You may find more information about the program and the application process by going here.

From now until Wednesday, March 20 at 5:00pm ET, The Brookings Institution is accepting applications for the program. Please help us spread the word among your colleagues and through your networks.

Please feel free to contact Jenny Alexander at cue@brookings.edu if you have any questions.

Holly & Kara: A Mother’s Intuition

Most mother-daughter activity guidebooks include tips for handling shopping, not hosting screenings. Yet, when Holly Pavlika signed on to host a Girl Rising screening, she instantly knew she wanted to involve her daughter Kara. Kara, 18, didn’t always value education and had no plans on attending college until Holly shared facts with her family about education as the avenue for empowering women. One in three girls in developing countries will be a child bride before they reach Kara’s age.

Kara is now a student at Syracuse University studying Information Technology and on the night of their screening she will be standing beside her mother as Holly gives opening remarks on Girl Rising. The film has connected a community of women dedicated to advocating for girl’s education- around the world, in their community, in their own family.

"I want Kara to know that she has a voice and we can use our collective voice to create change."

Abigail: Committed Captain

Abigail Bereola may only be a sophomore, but she’s already made the grade as an activist.

“I was nervous to host a Girl Rising screening but once I signed up, I knew I wanted all my tickets to sell out,” she recounted. Undeterred by slow beginning sales, she contacted fellow students at Amherst College and other neighboring schools to promote the film. Tickets to her screening sold out in less than a week.

No one can fault Abigail for admitting to us that her initial interest in Girl Rising stemmed from hearing her favorite actress, Kerry Washington, was co-narrating the film. With further research, she now understands the film’s core- “It shows girls and women are the keepers of their own stories, rather than stripping away their agency.”

When asked about what other campus activities were taking place during her Girl Rising screening, Abigail wasn’t concerned about what parties she’ll miss in her quest to bring attention to the power of educating girls.

Share the love and let’s dance.

We’re thrilled to share the love with you this Valentine’s Day.

Why?

Today is One Billion Rising, a call for one billion women and men to get up, walk out of their schools, offices and homes – and dance!  Hundreds of events will dot the globe in an estimated 205 countries today, marking a day of action – and dancing – to protest violence against women and girls.

And we’ve certainly got our dancing shoes on today.  During the filming of Girl Rising, we traveled around the world to meet hundreds of incredible girls and hear their stories. While setting up for interviews, we’d often ask if they liked to dance – and not only did they like to dance, but showed us how.  Check out our Let’s Dance! video to see some of our favorite dance moves.  If you look closely, you’ll even see some of the Girl Rising filmmakers and writers:

The movement is happening - both on the global dance floor and with the momentum leading up to the Girl Rising premiere on March 7th. With over 500 screenings in the works around the United States, it’s time to reserve your ticket. Find a screening near you and make sure to reserve your seat today.
